Effects of Deregulation on the Airline Industry
This is an excerpt from the paper...
The purpose of this research study was to assess the effects of deregulation on specific economic aspects of airline industry performance. The specific aspects of airline performance that were investigated were associated with consumer service. The research methodology followed in the conduct of this study is described and explained herein in the contexts of (1) research questions, (2) variables and conceptual definitions, (3) data collection, (4) instrumentation, (5) data preparation, (6) statistical hypotheses, (7) criteria for answering research questions, and (8) data analysis.Consumer service was evaluated within the contexts of the airline flightinterruption rate, the number of destination cities served, service frequency to destination cities, and the airline ontime performance rate. Within the context of these evaluative criteria, the research questions that were investigated were as follows: 1. Did the airline flightinterruption rate change between 1979 and 1992? If the airline flightinterruption rate changed, was the change positive or negative? 2. Did the number of airline destination cities change between 1979 and 1992? If the number of airline destination cities changed, was the change positive or negative? 3. Did the service frequency to destination cities change between 1979 and 1992? If the frequency of service to airline destination cities changed, was the change positive or negative?

ariables, a mean of service frequencies for all cities was developed. For the airline flightinterruption rate dependent variable, a mean of flightinterruption variables for all airlines was developed. For the airline ontime performance dependent variable, a mean ontime performance rate for all airlines was developed.
Statistical Hypotheses
Statistical hypotheses were developed in relation to each of the research questions investigated. The statistical hypotheses were stated in the null form. These statistical hypotheses were stated as follows:
1. It is hypothesized that the airline flightinterruption rate did not change between 1979 and 1992?
2. It is hypothesized that the number of airline destination cities did not change between 1979 and 1992?
3. It is hypothesized that the service frequency to destination cities did not change between 1979 and 1992?
4. It is hypothesized that the airline ontime performance rate did not change between 1979 and 1992?
Criteria for Answering Research Questions
Research question number one asked whether the airline flightinterruption rate changed between 1979 and 1992, and, if such a change did occur, was the change positive or negative. An increase in the airline flightinterru
