Richards (1971) and others equated intralingual errors with developmental errors, i.e. errors which "illustrate the learner attempting to build up hypotheses about the English language" (p. 212). The difference between Richards' and Elliott's concepts of intralingual errors may be one of points of view. An error due to the intrinsic nature of the language (intralingual) is an error not because of such nature but because of how the learner interprets it, and such interpretation is a step in the learning (development) of the language. Light (1978) draws our attention to the fact that traditionally all errors had been considered interlingual, but that the new perspective was on the structure of the English language and on the strategies by which a second language is acquired and taught, as much as on the interference of the native language.
