Makeup of Framers of the Constitution

This is an excerpt from the paper...

The group which benefitted most from the original Constitution of the United States was composed of rich white males. These rich white men were the Framers of the Constitution, and it should not be a surprise that they created a document of law which first and foremost protected their own self-interests, their own power and property. As we read,

for example, slavery was permitted to flourish. In addition, because the Constitution leaves voting qualifications to the states, persons without property, women, and many African Americans were long disenfranchised. . . . The framers had deliberately avoided direct election of senators, for the Senate was seen as a check on the multitudes (Cummings and Wise 46).

Certainly the argument can be made that the Framers were working in a moral and political context different than our own. It can also be argued that the Constitution created by these men was a monumental advancement toward democracy and liberty from conditions under the British. However, whatever the explanation or rationalization, the result is clear: rich white men benefitted most from the original Constitution. These men wrote a document which led to power being held by themselves, on both state and federal levels.

reflects the injustices and inequalities of the original Constitution. Power is defined as "the possession of control over others" (Cummings and Wise 15). The Framers' concept of justice and value system were established in reaction to the oppression the British government had imposed on the Colonies. The Framers sought democratic government as a remedy to the injustices of the British government: "In a democratic government, power, in theory, flows from the people as a whole. This is one of the ideals on which the American democracy was founded" (Cummings and Wise 16). If injustice is oppression of the majority by the few British rulers, them justice would be a power structure in which the American majority rules, in which the needs of the majority are addressed and met by the power structure. However, the power structure established by the Constitution was one in which a minority of rich white males ruled the country and held the power over the majority. The institutions of power (legislative, executive and judicial) were entirely dominated by rich white males, and the process whereby the members of these institutions were selected was defined and controlled by the rich white male Framers of the Constitution. Therefore, the Con
