Personality Traits of the Child Molester

lude pedophiles, drew more distorted heads, possibly indicative of psychotic intrusions, and more arms pressed against body, which is assumed to indicate insecurity feelings (Wysocki & Wysocki, 1977).

A sample of 175 males convicted of sexual assault against children, demonstrated that female children were victimized nearly twice as often as male children and all regressed offenders, regardless of the sex of the victim, were heterosexual in their adult orientation. The study concluded that the adult heterosexual male constitutes a greater risk to the underage child than the adult homosexual male (Groth & Birnbaum, 1978).

The most frequent clinical description of the sexual offender is a deficiency in social skills (Cohen, Calmas, & Seghorn, 1969). The incest offender is described as cold, dominating, exploitive, dependent, and one who projects blame and rationalization (Van Buskirk & Cole, 1983). A review of the literature and case studies reports that the incestuous offender is immature, passive, and timid, with low self-esteem and a fear of mature women. The offender is pseudomature, functioning with a view of the sexual act as hostile, and a fear of retribution from an adult female. A compulsive repetitive disorder is demonstrated. It has also been reported that the offender is in love with a version of himself as a child or that the act is an attempt to recover maternal love. The offence may be a result of organic brain pathology or an expression of personality disorder. Some psychiatrists view the offender as sociopathic, asocial, aggressive, driven by uncontrolled drives, having low impulse control, and having underdeveloped superegos with a warped capacity for object relations (Wells, 1981).
