The purpose of this paper is to examine the current status and trends in counseling in the United States. To this end, the paper presents and discusses a representative sampling of the research in this area. Specifically, the paper discusses the trends and current status of Counseling in America as it relates to: (1) Individual clinical practice; (2) The use of counseling in businesses and organizations; and (3) The use of counseling in the medical environment, e.g. counseling chronically ill patients. Since the majority of counseling is in the area of individual practice, the bulk of the review emphasizes trends and status as it relates to this area of counseling. Current Status and Trends in U.S. Counseling Current Trends/Status of Counseling in Clinical Practice As noted by Peterson and Nisenholz (1994), in clinical practice, counseling services utilize a variety of theoretical models. However, in terms of the actual practice of counseling, a large majority of counselors have been found to prefer humanistic theoretical perspectives such as the perspectives offered by gestalt or transpersonal therapeutic paradigms. According to Peterson and Nisenholz (1994), the transpersonal approach is itself one of the newest forces in psychology---barely two decades old. Argues that psychology and therapy together represent the only major profession left that has not addressed and integrated the natural world. This is ironic because it is argued that therapists, particularly Gestalt therapists, are unconsciously working on the front lines of the environmental crisis. They are seeing some of the primary casualties of that crisis and they are treating some of the most scarred and maimed cases of environmental degradation. The author urges psychologists to become involved with the environmental movement. "Ecopsychology" is the name most often used for the merger of psychological and ecological concerns. Issues are outlined concerning what psychologists can teach ecologists and what ecologists can teach psychologists.
