Nonprofit organizations exist in many different forms and for many different reasons, with some organizations serving only a small area in an urban setting while other organizations have a national, or even international, presence. Charities and foundations can be set up for research purposes, in order to provide direct financial assistance, or to provide some type of service to clients. Among the more popular types of nonprofit organizations are foundations, which typically have an endowment that is used to generate income for specific activities. Foundations are often formed to focus on a particular disease or group of diseases; this is the case with the Hemophilia Foundation of Michigan as well as the Children's Leukemia Foundation of Michigan. This research examines both of these organizations, including their history and organizational structure, and compares how these two health foundations view their missions and how they meet their objectives.The Hemophilia Foundation of Michigan (HFM) was formed in 1969 and took on nonprofit standing in 1970. This organization is part of the larger National Hemophilia Foundation and has provided assistance to other state groups starting hemophilia nonprofits. One of the primary functions of HFM is operating a summer camp for children and youth affected with hemophilia, and HFM has been operating such a camp longer than any other hemophilia organization in the country. Children's Leukemia Foundation of Michigan
The Children's Leukemia Foundation of Michigan (CLF) is also a foundation dedicated to a blood disease and, despite its name, serves both adults and children affected with leukemia. Recognizing that leukemia affects entire families when a child is diagnosed, the foundation provides support services to those around leukemia patients as well as the patients themselves. The mission of CLF is to provide and promote "compassionate, personalized support" to those in Michigan affected by leukemia (or other blood diseases) (CLF Mission 1).
Founded in 1952, CLF is nearly 20 years older than HFM. CLF was originally formed by a small group of parents, all of whom had a child die from leukemia. The original goal of the group was to provide support services to other families faced with the same disease at a time when such a diagnosis was often fatal. Since that time, the agency has expanded its mission to include adults as well as children in its services and to provide services throughout Michigan.
