Schwarzkopf's father was a major general who worked in several countries. In Iran in the 1940s Schwarzkopf Sr. was charged with creating a disciplined police force from the ranks of impoverished Iranians. He was able to do this with a great deal of care and courage. The younger Schwarzkopf was twelve years old at the time and observed his father in this effort. His own imagination was at the same time stirred by stories of the great battles of Xerxes and Alexander the Great:

The history of these ancient commanders conveyed the glory of soldiering, and it was a hankering for such achievement that Schwarzkopf took with him in 1952 to the United States Military Academy at West Point, where his father had been before him" (Cohen and Gatti, 1992, xii).
