Canadian lesbian stand-up comedian Jan Derbyshire--a woman in her late 30s--plays a Canadian lesbian stand-up comedian named Sheila Caston with a growing following who is on the verge of (arriving( commercially. The opening reel features a six-and-a-half-minute tour de force stand-up routine in which Caston makes jokes about the universal difficulty of emotional intimacy, the stoicism of lesbian bar cruising, and her own charismatic ability as a masculine female (to have any one of you I want.( She disarms the audience with her masculine jocularity, her rapid-fire wit.

Sheila(s stage charisma and renowned wit have gotten her an offer to become the first openly lesbian star of a Canadian television sitcom. She is thrilled to death by the offer until she learns that the person making the offer is Lynn Webster (Cindy Girling), the woman who was her girlfriend 15 years ago. Lynn is now married to a powerful white male TV producer named Bill Matthews (Steve Adams). Now, no matter how good the contract terms and the stardom they may bring, Sheila will not sign the contract because that would mean working with the woman who threw her out of her house into a rainstorm for merely kissing her on her birthday.
