Delimiting the Central Business District

This is an excerpt from the paper...

Murphy is the editor of Economic Geography and a member of the Graduate School of Geography at Clark University. Vance is on the staff of the Department of Geography at the University of Arkansas.

In this district there are concentrated the city's biggest buildings, highest land values, and, generally, the greatest pedestrian and automobile traffic. Godfrey explores another element of the effect of squatters, specifically environmental changes, and he concludes that The most serious long-term environmental problems associated with mining stem from mercury contamination, although short-term problems like malaria and sanitation also deserve attention. . . . Public policy would be better focused on ameliorating environmental problems, and on improving social services [because] . . . history shows that this resilient sector of independent miners cannot be eliminated, even by force. . . . (469). Both authors conclude that these squatter communities in areas surrounding mining enterprises are dynamic, resilient and at least semi-permanent. They advocate political land social planning which takes such squatter communities seriously and accept their presence. They do not argue for elimination of these communities, in part because the
