Cheating Dialogue
This is an excerpt from the paper...
M: Yes, I've been studying all evening, and you two have been watching television and eating pizza. This is not surprising, and you make your own choices. However, now you tell me that you have a foolproof plan for cheating on the exam tomorrow and that this plan is so foolproof that there is no chance at all of you're being caught. Well, I cannot go along with you on this, and I strongly urge that you do not do it, either. B: We went to a lot of trouble here, and who's going to be hurt? M: As to that, you will. You must see that cheating is wrong. B: A lot of people cheat. Probably everyone cheats. M: Everyone does not cheat, but even if they did, it would be wrong. Cheating is wrong at any time. There are certain absolutes we must follow, and this is one of them. C: That's an old-fashioned view. Nothing is absolute. We have to consider the circumstances, and when we did, we decided that cheating was acceptable this one time. M: You both plan to be doctors. Cheating will not be good for your reputation. B: There is a rule against cheating, it is true. Why do we follow that rule? We do it because we do not want to hurt our reputation, it is true. But, if no one knows we have cheated, it has no effect on our reputation at all. M: So, you are saying nothing is wrong unless someone sees you do it? M: That cannot be right. I know there are truths by which you live whether anyone sees you or not. You wouldn't kill someone just b

M: So all truth is subjective?
C: At some level, yes. Whatever we see as objective truth is true only because we all accept it is. If I hold up this cup and say it is red, we all agree because the color of this cup is one we agree to call red. But if a colorblind person sees it and says it is green, he's not lying, is he?
M: No, because there is no volition to lie. But at the same time, he is at a clear disadvantage because he cannot communicate with others and make himself clearly understood. If we do not have some agreement on what things mean, we cannot communicate and cannot deal openly and honestly with other people. And we agree as a society that certain knowledge is needed, certain values are to be respected, and specifically that cheating is wrong. You agree that education is important, do you not?
B: Yes.
C: Certainly.
M: And you agree that we place education at a high level because it serves our individual needs and at the same time could mean the betterment of society in the long run. The specific courses of study are arguable, but the importance of education at every level of society and
