Cheating Dialogue

M: Yes, I've been studying all evening, and you two have been watching television and eating pizza. This is not surprising, and you make your own choices. However, now you tell me that you have a foolproof plan for cheating on the exam tomorrow and that this plan is so foolproof that there is no chance at all of you're being caught. Well, I cannot go along with you on this, and I strongly urge that you do not do it, either.

B: We went to a lot of trouble here, and who's going to be hurt?

M: As to that, you will. You must see that cheating is wrong.

B: A lot of people cheat. Probably everyone cheats.

M: Everyone does not cheat, but even if they did, it would be wrong. Cheating is wrong at any time. There are certain absolutes we must follow, and this is one of them.

C: That's an old-fashioned view. Nothing is absolute. We have to consider the circumstances, and when we did, we decided that cheating was acceptable this one time.

M: You both plan to be doctors. Cheating will not be good for your reputation.

B: There is a rule against cheating, it is true. Why do we follow that rule? We do it because we do not want to hurt our reputation, it is true. But, if no one knows we have cheated, it has no effect on our reputation at all.

M: So, you are saying nothing is wrong unless someone sees you do it?

M: That cannot be right. I know there are truths by which you live whether anyone sees you or not. You wouldn't kill someone just because no one was there to see you do it, would you?

B: Of course not. I wouldn't do anything to hurt anyone.

M: You are assuming that cheating does not hurt anyone, of course. Why do you think we have rules against cheating? If you chat, you hurt those who did not. They work hard and you don't, for one thing.

C: That's their choice, but they still get the grade they would have gotten whether I cheated or not. So, they are not hurt. I w...
