979 when the APTA HOD required that entry level physical therapists have a baccalaureate degree. Over the years, several efforts have been made to rescind the policy. All, however, have been unsuccessful.
While a baccalaureate degree may or may not be of benefit to physical therapists, it is clearly inappropriate for physical therapists assistants. According to the health care role's very definition, a PTA is someone "who has graduated from an accredited PTA associate degree program" (6:571-582). Obviously, to require that entry level physical therapists assistants have a baccalaureate degree would involve a complete reevaluation of the PTA specialty itself. I, personally, do not believe that such an effort would be worthwhile.
Moreover, the APTA HOD's requirement for a baccalaureate degree among physical therapists gave rise to numerous problems. For example, administrators at certain educational institutions threatened to withdraw from the national accreditation process. Some even proposed to establish their own statewide physical therapy accreditation programs; others claimed that the individual institutions awarding degrees should be able to set their own requirements.
