Social class plays a strong role in the use of language and the type of thinking processes that come into the therapy room (Boynton, 1987, p. 124). Both the client and the therapist can be sure that misunderstandings will arise if definitions and words are not openly discussed. Nothing is to be assumed.

Roberta Ann Shechter of the Hunter School of Social Work suggests that therapists work quite seriously to find life experiences of their own that identify with the feelings being described by the client of a different culture. Her story of the case of a Black man who was constantly being perceived as a physical threat, even though he was a quite mild, gentle person, challenged her to recall incidents in her childhood when taunting children placed her emphatically in the category of "dirty Jew." The feelings of fear, lack of group identification, and the drive to disassociate were just like those described by the Black male. This common experience on a feeling level enabled the two of them to form a bond in spite of cultural differences (Shechter, 1992, p. 341).
