BENEFITS OF TECHNOLOGY TRANSFER IN THE GLOBAL ENVIRONMENT

The Federal Laboratory Consortium for Technology Transfer (FLC, 2004) defines "technology transfer" as the process by which technology or technological knowledge developed in one place for one purpose is applied and exploited in another place and/or for some other purpose. The FLC also notes that while technology transfer has historically been associated with governmental activities, the most common form of technology transfer is between government laboratories and non-government organizations such as private industry, academia, and state or local governments.

Chumack (2002) points out that in today's global environment, there is a good deal of technology transfer that also takes place at the international level which is to say that not only one country benefits from technology transfer but also the whole global community. Chumack further notes that this international or global transfer of technology increases the benefits of technology transfer exponentially.

The purpose of this paper is to examine the benefits of technology transfer in the global environment. As noted by Cohen (2004), technology transfer is greatly helping developing countries. However, it is noted that the benefits go far beyond this and that it is these benefits, which generally provide the reasons for technology transfer.
