It could decide to manufacture electronic fuel injection systems (EFI), or it could go into the broader electronic engine control market. Although the company currently holds a patent on EFI systems, that patent is due to expire in 1978, and the company must determine whether or not it wants to participate in this internationally growing, but still experimental, market. Certainly the company has not taken advantage of the patent which it has held for several decades.

Bendix received a broad patent for EFI systems some years ago; the patent has been broadly interpreted so that even nonelectronic fuel injection systems (mechanical systems) are also covered. International companies have successfully licensed the technology which Bendix has not taken advantage of, and have even cross-licensed some of this technology back to Bendix. Some American car manufacturers are pursuing their own version of EFI systems, and Bendix's patent expires in 1978. Congressional mandates for lower emissions and higher fuel efficiency are causing increased interest in EFI systems since these systems help achieve these apparently contradictory goals.

Although the American car market has been slow to adopt EFI and associated technologies, Bendix licensed the technology to Bosch (a European manufacturer) and to several Japanese comp
