EMOTIONAL INTELLLIGENCE AND HUMAN RESOURCE MANAGEMENT

The idea of "emotional intelligence" really is the idea of understanding and dealing with the feelings of others. If there is one thing we have learned in our classes, it is that the human factor will never truly be eclipsed by technology. Robotics, the internet, all sorts of computer information will become very useful, but it is the human factor that still controls how we act and react. "Virginia Tech scientists in say a student's emotional intelligence indirectly contributes to academic success in information technologyàEmotional intelligence was defined as "the ability to perceive, assess, and positively influence personal and others' emotions" (UPI 1).

It is now a fact that many human resource directors plan for testing EQ, the "emotional quotient" (as opposed to IQW, the "intelligence quotient") of new hires. "So what is it? Emotional Intelligence (EQ or EI) is a doctrine that argues that to achieve maximum success, individuals need to be aware of their own and others' emotions, and to be able to manage them" (Anon 20).

The very notion of "maximum productivity" is really what provides the foundation for good human resource management. The department that used to be known as "personnel" has obviously been upgraded. In fact, the Oxford Dictionary of Human Resource Management (2005) offers an interesting description of today's Human Resource Management as " a coordinated approach to managing people that seeks to integrate the various personnel activities so that they are compatible with each other. Therefore, the key areas of employee resourcing (sic), employee development, employee reward, and employee involvement are considered to be interrelated. Policy-making and procedures in one of these areas will have an impact on other areas, therefore human resource management is an approach that takes a holistic view and considers how these various areas can be int...
