EFFECTS OF RELIGIOSITY LEVEL ON ATTITUDES TOWARD HOMOSEXUALITY

College students with a higher categorical level of religiosity are more likely to oppose homosexuality.

The independent variable for this study is categorical level of religiosity.

The dependent variable for this study is the categorical level of attitude toward homosexuality.

Religiosity. For this study, religiosity is nominally defined as the belief in and reverence for a supreme, supernatural being or beings, often expressed by worship, ritual, and a certain way of life. The level of religiosity is operationally defined by the Survey Instrument.

Attitudes Toward Homosexuality. For this study, attitudes toward homosexuality is nominally defined as attitudes toward an individual who currently has or has had sexual relations with a member of the same sex. The level of attitudes toward homosexuality is operationally defined by the Survey Instrument.

Survey research, a nonexperimental design will be used for this study. The Survey Questionnaire, developed by the researcher, will be used to determine how students rate their level of religiosity and their attitude toward homosexuality.

Subjects will be 50 male and 50 female students from CSUN, located from a local university; no groups will be assigned.

The researcher will present surveys to students during classes after obtaining permission from the teachers. Students will be asked to answer the surveys while the researcher waits, thus they will be instructed and monitored by the researcher. Although no risk is anticipated, students will be debriefed by being reassured that their participation is voluntary, confidential, and they may chose not to participate.
