Behavioral Management Training of Nursing Staff

This is an excerpt from the paper...

This study examines the effects of behavioral management training in reducing the occurrences of aggressive behaviors among elderly patients diagnosed with dementia. Forty-five involuntary elderly patients in a residential care center were observed by certified nurse's assistants (CNA) and licensed practical nurses as to the number of aggressive behaviors displayed before nurses completed a month of behavioral training and after completing training. Results show no significant differences in the occurrence of aggressive behaviors in Pre and Post training. Reduction in the average amount of aggressive behaviors did, however, produce better result for the CNA's compared to licensed nurses. Difference in individual aggressive behavioral frequencies shows greater improvement for "Resistive to Care" for the CNA nurses.

Reducing Aggressive Behaviors Among Elderly with Dementia

Unfortunately many of the elderly residents in these residential care facilities are diagnosed with dementia making care a challenge. Dementia is classified as an impairment disorder effecting the vascular or neurological structures of the brain. In same case, dementia is treatable

care. In addition, Ghatak (1994) found that intervention programs on dementia patients resulted in a more structured encouragement communication style and assistance during times of need by the patients. Not only are communication techniques important in helping to provide better care, effective intervention training helps to reduce the number of physical injuries to both patient and caregivers resulting from aggressive acts such as fighting and other destructive behaviors. According to Palmer and Withee, (1996), learning both physical and non-physical intervention increased the staff's sense of safety, resulting in reduced need to use physical intervention. In addition, the study conducted by Whittington and Wykes (1996), found that violence fell to an unusual extent after staff training in psychological techniques for the management of patient aggression. The aim of the current study is to explore how effective intervention training or behavioral management training is in reducing the number of aggressive acts and behaviors one month after training has been completed between CNA's and Licensed nurses. One of the difficult tasks in conducting this study is to determine what constitutes and aggressive behavior. For the purpose
