Effective Listening Techniques

Active listening is arguably the single most useful and important listening skill. In active listening, one is genuinely interested in understanding what the other person is thinking, feeling, wanting or what the message means. The listener verifies their understanding before responding with their own message. An active listener does not passively receive messages. To be an effective listener, one must respond with verbal and nonverbal cues which let the speaker know that you are listening and understanding. An active listener often restates or paraphrases their understanding of the message they receive to verify that they have received and understood the message. It is this process of validation and verification that distinguishes active listening from other modes of listening and makes the process more effective. There is a clear distinction between merely hearing the words spoken and listening for the message to meaning. Effective listening often results in the listener being able to understand what the speaker thinks and feels. With effective listening techniques, one is more likely to be able to view the world from the speaker's perspective - whether we agree with that perspective or not.

Effective listening has an important role in working with my immediate supervisor.
