e-COMMERCE IN THE NETHERLANDS: BARRIERS TO GROWTH & STRATEGIES TO STIMULATE: A PROPOSED THESIS STATEMENT

Many analysts predict that the American-centric character of the Internet generally and electronic commerce (e-commerce) specifically will end well before 2005. Should merchants outside the United States fail to prepare to serve the coming wave of non-American e-commerce customers, however, it is the American e-commerce merchants who will reap the greatest benefits of the growth of e-commerce in Europe, Asia, and Latin America.

Experience to date with e-commerce indicates that electronic merchants generally generate most of their e-commerce revenues and profits from outside their domestic markets. With this premise in mind, a research study is proposed, the purpose of which will be to investigate how best merchants in the Netherlands can prepare to be effective competitors in global e-commerce. The thesis statement for this proposed study will be as follows:

To become effective competitors in global e-commerce, Dutch merchants first must become effective e-commerce competitors within the domestic market of the Netherlands. In turn, to become effective competitors in e-commerce within the Netherlands, Dutch merchants must identify the barriers to the growth of e-commerce within the Netherlands and develop strategies designed to overcome these barriers and stimulate the growth of e-commerce in the Netherlands.
