Tangential, Circumstantial, Incoherent Thought

rns to the original point.

Incoherent thought processes are not linear with a coherent theme and are difficult to follow. With incoherent thought there are loose associations and one thought has no meaningful or logical connection to the other. With this type of thinking, the listener typically has no idea what the patient has said and is unable to understand the thought process. Patients with incoherent thought processes differ from those with tangential thought processes or circumstantial thought processes, since thoughts are not connected and there is no return to the original point made. For example, the patient will begin with one statement, then make another unrelated statement, and then make another unrelated statement, and the processes continues, with the listdner never underrtanding what is being said or what point the patient is trying to make.
