It was really in 1981, when Ronald Reagan became President, that Dr. Koop's career changed. And, in his persistence to improve the health of America, he has become the leader (long after his terms as Surgeon-General were over) in creating the organizations and the publicity to ensure that citizens all over the world can find the stimulus to improve their habits which may cause serious illness. He was first approached by several key for the Reagan presidency, and while he was asked about becoming surgeon-general (he was, after all, a stalwart Republican) he hesitated at first. His wife really helped him make his mind up. "You know you're going to be miserableànext year after you retireà.with someone else at the helm."
