Dos and Don'ts for Business Travel to the Philippines:

In November 2002, the terrorist Abu Sayyaf Group (ASG) in the Philippines issued a long and public threat against U.S. citizens and interests in the Philippines. The ASG is an Islamic organization, and has gone on record as finding a number of things to be against the will of Allah and included on that list are people who use electricity (with the obvious dispensation, of course to all members of Abu Sayyaf who do need electricity to run their computers so they can talk with other murderers around the world.)

There have been a number of Filipinos, Americans and foreign tourists kidnapped since April 2000, and most were released after ransoms were paid. Also included in those released were several prominent Jewish citizens, which suggests that a Jew who can pay a large sum for his life is somehow different than a Jew who cannot. That Allah must have been a shrewd judge of character. Now, based on the United States government's analysis of Abu Sayyaf, the feeling is that travel to the region is all right only if absolutely necessary; as long as these precautions are taken.

1. Don't tell any stranger, for whatever purpose, where you are from, or what you are doing. This includes all hotel workers.

2. Do not take expensive luggage, wear jewelry, cologne, bright colors.

3. Do not take any sort of public transportation.

5. Make all phone calls from a cell phone and always in private. Avoid all calls to your hometown.

6. Immediately on arrival, contact Police (some of them have been known to be trusted) and the American Embassy. Let them know where you will be staying, for how long, who you will be seeing.

7. Take only one credit card. Do not use that credit card for any purchases that might be observed.
