CORRECTIONS-BASED DOMESTIC ABUSE COUNSELING PROGRAMSStudies show that more than half of youths in long-term state juvenile institutions have one or more immediate family members who have also been incarcerated (DiIulio, 1995, p. 18). A study that compared the family experiences of more violent and less violent incarcerated juveniles found that 75 percent of the former group had suffered serious abuse by a family member, while 33 percent of the latter group had been abused. Similarly, 78 percent of the more violent group had been witnesses to extreme violence in the home, while 20 percent of the less violent group had witnessed such behavior. Most prisoners come from single-parent families, over one-quarter have parents who abused drugs or alcohol, and nearly one-third have a brother with a jail or prison record (DiIulio, 1994, p. 19).
