Workers in industrialized nations generally receive a certain amount of paid vacation each year. In the United States, most employers grant two weeks of paid vacation after a probationary time period, generally a year or two. However in Europe, workers receive a month of paid leave. Some people in the United States are backing a Work to Live campaign in order to persuade Congress to pass laws that guarantee a certain amount of paid leave each year. It is the thesis of this essay, that an increase in vacation time would be beneficial to American workers.The changes that occurred in this country during the 1960s and 1970s brought enormous changes in the American society, including the Women's Liberation Movement, a shift in stereotyped roles for women, allowing them a more expansive approach to their careers and life in general. This heightened consciousness, combined with widespread birth control availability brought economic freedom for women with accompanying responsibilities. These changes have made the American family more fragile, and the divorce rate is high. In most marriages, both members of the couple work, and their income is essential to the standard of living that people expect. As a consumer society, much is expected out of life, and it takes two incomes to bring in the amount of money needed to pay for all the soccer lessons, golf clubs, gourmet coffees, restaurant meals, cable channels, and other accoutrements of twenty-first century life.
