Williams (1992) defines the act of managing diversity as the "desire to recognize, respect and capitalize on different strands and backgrounds in American society, like race, ethnic origin and gender" (Williams, 1992). Williams' definition is premised on the truism that different cultural groups have different values, styles, and personalities, which may have a substantial effect on the way they "do business."

A great deal of management literature, therefore, has arisen that is designed to help managers (1) identify diversity problems within the organization; (2) set general or

concrete diversity goals; (3) formulate specific diversity programs and procedures designed to meet those goals; and (4) train management personnel to manage diversity in the workplace.

This paper will focus on one theoretical construct of the literature -- the cultural audit. The company selected for the cultural audit will be Westwood Studios in Las Vegas, a large producer of interactive computer games.

Formed in 1985, Las Vegas-based Westwood Studios designs, manufactures and markets computer interactive CD-ROM titles including: Dune II, the Lands of Lore series, the Kyrandia« adventure trilogy, Monopoly« for the Internet, Blade Runner, Games People Play and the Command & Conquer« product line. The company's business model is definitely high tech, and the main product is considered the creation of computer codes that allow sophisticated levels of game playing.
