Karl Marx was a prolific writer. In a work of his called The Grundrisse, he stated that society does not consist of individuals but is, instead, "the sum of interrelations, the relations with which these individuals stand. As if someone were to say: 'Seen from the perspective of society, there are no slaves and no citizens: both are human beings" (Marx, 1844,1978, 247).He wrote a lot about how wrong it is to label and categorize people, apparently wanting to reserve the right to do that act himself. He labeled his "reserve army of laborers" as "floaters" (people who did seasonal work, or who worked when the spirit moved them) or "latent" (farm workers or student workers) and "stagnant" (the seriously disenfranchised).
