DISTRIBUTED DATABASES

As its name suggests, a distributed database is a collection of data that is located in several different physical locationsùthat is, distributed over several resourcesùwhile operating as a single logical database. This provides system managers the ability to distribute the database over multiple systems depending on system resources, and to use either local or wide area networks to access the data. When this type of database configuration is used, there are obviously many different factors that need to be taken into account. It is critical, for example, that users be unaware of the data distribution, so there should be no degradation in speed. Similarly, having data on multiple machines may increase the vulnerability of the database to security breaches. This research considers these and other issues associated with distributed databases.

One of the primary benefits of a distributed database system is the heterogeneity that is supported by this approach. Since data reside on different machines, there is no need for the hardware to be the same across the network. This allows users at one site to use hardware that meets their overall needs while users at another site may use different hardware. With tools such as SQL able to operate on different types of database engines and platforms, heterogeneity is easily supported (Dye 1).

Similarly, openness is a key requirement of a distributed database system. Since many different users are likely to be both reading and writing information to the database, the various database components need to be able to communicate with one another and with disparate applications. While some distributed database systems are set up with proprietary database engines that cannot interface with components from other vendors, such an approach can easily minimize the benefits of the distributed approach (Dye 1).
