"Recommended Standards for School-Based Peer Mediation Programs" by Standards Committee of CREnet (1996) provides information that is needed to create a mediation program for peers. This information is based on standards that were developed in 1995 and represent the Standards Committee of NAME (National Association for Mediation in Education). Thus these standards can be considered as based on adequate research evaluation rather than subjective opinion of one researcher. To develop a peer mediation program in my school, the points made in this article must be considered. To begin with it is important to understand exactly what is meant by mediation, peer mediation program, and peer mediator, which are terms clearly defined by this paper. Those needed to run the program are also indicated along with the activities they are responsible for and the training required. Beyond this the article provides the essentials for developing and implementing this type of program. For example, assessment of the school must take place initially to determine what is needed and who is willing to commit or support the program. While informal meetings with relevant participants can provide valuable information, commitment may be more clear through a formal survey assessment.
