Mental health has become a major issue in our society today. But, as my research and interview will show, there is a vast difference between the basic term "mental health" and "mental healing". The sad fact remains that mental illness is increasing in the U.S. "A recent survey reveals as many as 24 million Americans may need mental-health treatment but aren't getting it. The surveya found that 27% of adults, or an estimated 59 million people, have received mental-health treatment in the past two years. However, another one in 10 Americans who report sufficient distress to need treatment are not getting it" (Vaccaro 2004 18). However, the increase in mental patients requiring institutionalization has increased, straining facilities such as the one in Norwalk, CA., an 855-bed acute psychiatric hospital administered by the California Department of Mental Health. "The recent addition of an enhanced security section devoted to judicially committed patients provides many unique challenges" (Gilbert 2001 3). What is vital in such facilities is to have trained personnel on staff who are challenged to create and supervise meaningful activities and programs. One such employee is Richard Gilbert. I interviewed him about his background and prognosis for some of the patients. "Well," he told me, "the best possible outcome would be one in which a patient is discharged ands becomes gainfully employed and no longer poses any threat to either himself or others."
