Touring Museums via the Web

This is an excerpt from the paper...

The Louvre museum in France is accessible by a virtual tour on the web. You can tour through the various galleries and exhibits, read the history of the Louvre, and get information on opening hours, ticket reservations etc. The site lists events, activities, classes, etc., but all in French, so a knowledge of the language is necessary to use this site meaningfully. There are also images of the architecture of the Louvre, including the Pyramid designed by I.M. Pei. The museum has a database known as Atlas, which is available to researchers, and allows consultation of all the works of art exhibited at the Louvre, showing the information normally seen by visitors on the labels next to the works of art in the museum. However, these are also written in French, so a knowledge of the language is necessary to use the database.

There are also other databases available to researchers: an extensive database of 140,000 works of the Prints and Drawings Department, with digitalized reproductions of the works, in color; a database in text only of 120,000 descriptions of drawings, prints, and paintings from the VIIth century to the present of the collections of over 60 museums in France; a database of 7,000 items included in collections of the museum in thd Department of Oriental Antiquities covering the geographical area from the valley of the Indus to North Africa countries and from the Caucasus to Yemen, and
