The quantitative procedure used in the study reported in this article was a stepwise multiple regression analysis. The stepwise approach is a specialized multiple regression procedure. The multiple regression procedure was used in this study because the model being tested in the study was comprised of multiple dependent and independent variables. The stepwise approach to multiple regression analysis is useful in cases such as this study where there are multiple categories for the dependent variable.

Multiple regression is a general statistical technique through which one can analyze the relationship between a dependent or criterion variable and a set of independent or predictor variables. Multiple regression may be viewed either as a descriptive tool by which the linear dependence of one variable on others is summarized and decomposed, or as an inferential tool by which the relationships in the population are evaluated from the examination of sample data.

Multiple regression is used as a descriptive tool in three types of situations: (1) to develop a self-weighting estimating equation by which to predict values for a dependent variable; (2) to control for confounding variables so as to better evaluate the contribution of other variables; and (3) to test explicit causal theories. Multiple regression is used as an inferential tool in hypothesis testing. In the testing of hypotheses, multiple regression provides the data by which researchers may either reject or not reject the null forms of the hypotheses being tested. If the null form of an hypothesis is rejected, then, by inference, the hypothesis may be accepted; and, conversely, if the null form of an hypothesis cann
