Multiculturalism & Responsibilities of Schools

This is an excerpt from the paper...

No one can deny that America is becoming an increasing multicultural and diverse society. The traditional heterogeneous education meted out to children in the past is no longer viable (Villa, Thousand, Meyers, & Nevin, 1996).

As Sonia Nieto (2005) has noted, schools inevitably reflect society. Because this is the case, affirming diversity and embracing multiculturalism is vital in order to overcome the very real disadvantages under which certain groups labor. Students of color and students from poor families and poor communities bear the burden of structural inequality. As Nieto (2005) has commented, recognizing the value of diversity while responding to the needs of the disadvantaged is a responsibility that the schools must address if they are to fulfill their missions.

Multiculturalism can be addressed by ensuring that culturally diverse texts are available in classrooms. It can also be facilitated by inculcating respect for all groups in classrooms and achieving comfort with the differences that exist between groups. Making sure that all racial, ethnic, and religious groups are treated with dignity is clearly essential. Eliminating discrimination and bias should begin in the schools and continue throughout all aspects of American life. America has no choice but to accept and embrace multiculturalism.

Nieto, S. (2005). What does it mean to affirm diversity?
