Love seems to be one of the motivating forces of the universe. Individuals and countries have gone to war for it. People have died for it. It inspires so many expressions in the arts and is one of the motivations for the perpetuation of the human species. But what is it? It is the thesis of this essay that love is a force by which people come to know each other and are transformed in the process.

It seems that love does not occur without a deep knowing between the individuals. Such deep disclosure and sometimes disappointment can bring loss, depression, pain, or great joy. The process is transforming, and putting something new together requires a taking apart of what was there before. The result is unpredictable and never guaranteed. In the French poem "Il pleure dans mon coers" by Paul Verlaine, the poet writes about the sorrow of wanting to be with the person he loves. His heart is crying, just as it is raining on the rooftops (Verlaine). The bittersweet aspect of love is a part of the decision to love. Even though the person has apparently lost the one he loves, his heart is changing as it is pierced, sobbing, and going through the worst pain. The writer will never be the same again, as he has known in a deep way the presence of the one he loved, even if she is no longer with him.
