Materials Handling & Workplace Safety
This is an excerpt from the paper...
The purpose of this research study was to determine the policy approach that will optimize the effectiveness of such efforts. The rationale upon which this research was conducted held that management, labor, health, and legal perspectives must be developed into a consensus as to the most appropriate approach to the problem. An assumption was made that the most effective solutions to the problem would be those that all stakeholders support. The research approach in this study was evaluational in character. Alternative approaches to the development and implementation of ergonomic innovations to address work injury risks associated with materials handling were evaluated by representatives of the major stakeholder groups associated with the issue. The research question investigated was as follows: Will the most effective ergonomic responses to materials handling worker injury risks be developed (1) when such action and minimum outcomes are codified into federal law, or (2) when such action and minimum outcomes are left to the discretion of individual companies? A sample was selected for this research study through the application of random procedures. Representatives from management, labor, health, and law were included in the research sample. ANOVA was the statistical procedure applied in the conduct of this research study. Quantitative assessments (dependent variables) were compared on the basis of dichotomous classifications (independent variables). Statis

l physical therapists take the injured employees through the details of their jobs, teaching them the most effective, safe methods of performing each task.
At Reneer Film Corp. in Auburn, Pennsylvania, the requirement to lift film rolls weighing from 50-to-200 pounds created risks. After being produced in a calendar machine, the rolls were lowered manually to the floor. Recognizing the risk of injury of this manual method, Reneer Film installed a lift table to do the lifting. By touching a button to position the lift table, the skilled calendar machine operators now perform the lifting step without the risk of injury.
Picking by the part-to-picker method can increase efficiency and productivity while also improving the picking task from an ergonomic perspective. The method eliminates walk and search motions. Management at the Bendix Avelex Division of Allied Signal Inc. in Montreal, Quebec, however, made further ergonomic improvements to part-to-picker picking. The aerospace company's picking operations involve small, delicate, and expensive electronic components and mechanical parts. Bendix Avelex enhanced its chosen picking technology, a horizontal carousel by adding another technology·a hydraulically powered scissor
