Critique of Breakpoint & Beyond
This is an excerpt from the paper...
Today's business environment is not like the environment of 100 years ago, or even 20 years ago. Technology has brought the world closer together through revolutions in transportation, telecommunication and data processing. Consumers in Los Angeles can purchase items made in Mexico with parts from Germany by a company with headquarters in Tokyo. There is a global interrelationship among business and consumers which was not foreseen by most analysts in the early and even middle of the twentieth century. The rapid rise of technology and the increased demand on scarce natural resources have led to other unforeseen consequences, including a depletion of natural lands and natural resources to the point that some areas have difficulty obtaining potable water. Rain forests are being destroyed to increase the amount of arable land, and the toll on the ecology of the planet has been significant. Authors Land and Jarman suggest that the combination of globalization and the rise of technology has made it necessary for society in general, and companies in particular, to rethink the ways they approach their activities. This research examines some of the authors' main points, and considers how a company might make use of this information.According to the authors, the future is pulling society forward, and society actively is resisting that pull (p. 127). This value coincides with the value of working toward shared values in order to make the world a better place.

These companies deliver "spring" water, or otherwise purified water, to the homes and offices of their customers on a regular basis, and can provide dispensers which chill or heat the water on demand. According to Land and Jarman, traditional companies would view their vision and purpose as merely delivering bottled water on a timely basis and at a reasonable price. But a bottled water company which recognizes the influence of future pull could expand its market share and profitability while transforming its organization.
Such a transformation would begin with a re-examination of the company's mission. Bottled water companies, at their most bas
