New Models of Internet Marketing

Many analysts predict that the American-centric character of the Internet generally and electronic commerce (e-commerce) specifically will end well before 2010. Therefore, companies planning to market their products via the Internet need to broaden the scope of the criteria they apply in defining their target markets.

There are several models for the conduct of e-commerce over the Internet and the World Wide Web (WWW). One of those models is B2C (business-to-consumer), which is not be confused with the better known B2B (business-to-business) model. B2C technology makes it possible for organizations to communicate directly with consumers (Arnig, 2001). The B2C model does not necessarily mean that communications between and organizations and their customers are interactive, although many for-profit organizations with B2C operations do offer consumers to purchase products through their Web sites (Hatchell, 2001). Of those for-profit firms operating B2C Web sites, 60 percent use shopping cart management tools, such as catalogs, cards, and credit card processing.

Business-to-business (B2B) sites on the Internet and the WWW are electronic locations designed to facilitate the conduct of e-commerce between and among business firms. The value chain for a company or an industry identifies the separate activities and functions involved in the manufacture of a product and the movement of that product to the end user. Each activity and function identified in a value chain involves associated costs. The sum of the costs of all activities and functions involved in the manufacture and movement of a product to the customer represents the total cost of the product to the customer (Thompson & Strickland, 2002).
