Decision Making Problems of a Hospital

FCH provides medical services for a wide variety of needs in the community. It prints its mission statement on the reverse side of business cards, and employees are encouraged to emphasize the hospital's commitment to high-quality care through a broad range of services that are in agreement with the hospital's. However, there is confusion about the decision making process at the hospital and the result is that there is frustration among employees and mixed signals for new employees coming into the organization. Employees find that their personal and professional ethics can come into conflict, and this causes problems with DNR directives among other situations. This not only puts the hospital at risk in terms of litigation, but also affects the quality of care that is provided to clients and compromises the performance of employees over the long-term, as well.

Besides the personal and professional ethics coming into conflict on an employee level, there are conflicts between the organizational ethics and values. FCH operates based on the religious values and vision of its organizational affiliation, but it must also operate -- as a healthcare provider -- within the framework of the Hippocratic Oath. Failing to do so puts the employees at conflict, and also raises ethical issues from medical associations.
