A Hospital & a Community Crisis

The mission statement for Faith Community Hospital (FCH) reads:

With the foundation and commitment of our spiritual heritage and values, our mission is to promote the health and well-being of the people in the communities we serve through a comprehensive continuum of services provided in collaboration with the partners who share the same vision and values.

Yet this mission statement provides very little "real" value to the employees who are confronted with challenging ethical decisions on a daily basis. There can be conflict between an employee's personal ethics and the demands of the hospital regarding do not resuscitate (DNR) orders, for example, and the mission statement offers little guidance when such conflicts occur. At this point, although the hospital has performed well in the past, it faces a crisis in the community as it seeks to redefine itself and provide greater clarity to its employees as they serve the community.

The facility is a non-profit entity that provides the community with medical needs, including innovative care such as a neonatal unit. Employees' business cards have the organization's mission statement displayed on the reverse side. The mission statement, as noted above, includes the commitment of FCH to providing care through a broad range of services that follow closely the hospital's vision and values.
