Instructional Unit on Anger Control and Management

This instructional unit on anger control and management is targeted at students from the third to fifth grades. To ensure that students will feel comfortable in familiar surroundings, the 50-minute unit will take place within the classroom setting. It is based on Ralph Tyler's (1949) instructional design model that emphasizes the need for the curriculum to match the learning needs and backgrounds of the learners, their society and the educators involved. Therefore, this instructional unit is designed to encourage students to tap into their own experiences and apply their newly acquired skills in order to cope with their anger. Moreover, in tandem with Tyler's (1949) order of procedures that emphasizes the collection of data to confirm the validity of instructional approaches, this instructional unit will also contain several formative evaluations that will provide the designer of the instructional unit with vital information to further improve the program.

The underlying rationale for utilizing Tyler's (1949) instructional design model is to create and adapt an instructional unit that will be responsive to the learning needs and backgrounds of the students. Therefore, the student-centered perspective, the pilot testing and the use of formative evaluations, as advocated by Tyler (1949), will be used to determine whether the instructional unit-- its philosophy and teaching strategies--will be effective for the targeted population. Further modifications can then be made to ensure that the final version of the instructional unit will be most effective for attaining the learning objectives, as stated below.

At the end of the completion of this instructional unit on anger control and management, the student will:

Possess a heightened awareness of the emotion of anger.

Acquire effective strategies for coping with anger.
