Korean-Americans

Coming from a culture rooted in the Buddhist philosophy, first and second generation Korean-Americans have embraced Christianity and combined the two belief systems into a unique blend which includes hours of Bible study, self-discipline, honoring the elders and ancestors, serving the community and practicing their customs.

Children are doted on, particularly the boys, and much is sacrificed to pay for their education. In return the parents have definite expectations for them, chiefly the eldest son, to not only have a family, but also care for the parents as they get older. After school programs and private tutors in math, English, music, sports and other subjects have flourished in Koreatown due to this motivation to excel academically and achieve an Ivy League education and career.

Because this community tends to be exclusive and interaction with other cultures is limited, there is a fear of outsiders, most notably Hispanics and African-Americans. Indicators of these tensions have been the 1994 Riots and the shooting of an African-American girl by a Korean shopkeeper. Consequently, a coalition has been set up to discuss peaceful ways to resolve these issues

The high level of competition and need to be productive, coupled with involvement in an exclusively Korean community has created a need for relaxed outside interaction, primarily with other cultures. As an educator I can see a need for some casual, fun-filled activities for children with less stress given to competing and productivity and more stress given to creativity and exposure to other cultures. However, the love of learning, respect for elders and desire to be productive citizens serves as a role model to education as a whole.
