Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology, 65(6), 1017-1025. The purpose of this article was to investigate the role of interpersonal communication in sexual adjustment, specifically the roles of understanding and agreement were investigated. There were six research questions which guided the research: (1) is better communication related to sexual satisfaction in long-term relationships; (2) what are the elements of communication which are most important in sexual adjustment; (3) what is the contribution of understanding and agreement to sexual adjustment; (4) does convergent and discriminant correlational evidence support the relationship between sexual adjustment and co-orientation variables; (5) how does co-orientation operate when applied to nonsexual aspects of a relationship; and (6) using true stepwise multiple regression, how much variance in sexual satisfaction can be predicted by sexual co-orientation and other variables. The study participants were 76 heterosexual couples who were legally married (n = 63) or cohabitating (n = 13) for a mean of 9.57 years. The couples averaged two children and two years of education following high school. Most were Caucasian (91%) and men and women averaged 35.4 and 34.0 years of age, respectively.
