Refill Department of Consummate Corp.
This is an excerpt from the paper...
Introduction: Serious tensions exist in the refill unit of Consummate Corporation between and among the supervisors. The refill division operates three shifts making communication between supervisors and the unit manager, David Gold, difficult. There is an underlying problem within the unit between newly hired college graduates in one camp, and the so-called 'old-timers' in another group. Specifically, neither group respects the other, and there is animosity even within the two groups. Another problem is that historically the refill unit has been seen as the starting point for supervisors at Consummate Corporation and is seen by many employees as a dead end on the climb up the corporate ladder. Tension among the supervisors has been growing. David Gold is considering another off site meeting. This meeting is a follow up to one held six months earlier in which serious problems in the department were addressed. As a result of the previous meeting, some improvements were noted. David Gold needs to consider what action he should take to address the dysfunctional nature of the interactions in his management team. The remainder of this case study involves a detailed analysis of the problem, followed by a problem statement, a detailed description and evaluation of the alternatives, and a recommendation about which alternative should be acted upon. Analysis: The refill department is in a state of constant crisis. Part of the stress on the department is a function of t

A fourth change that Gold could make would involve alternating shifts for the management team. Ideally, this would address the perception that some shifts work harder than others, and that some supervisors have lost control of their subordinates.
A fifth option involves addressing the problem that supervisors are not permitted to discipline their employees. Gold could address this with senior management, and encourage the company to shift its thinking in this area. Looking in from the outside, it is easy to see how this policy is demoralizing to managers, but there is little doubt that it would be difficult for Gold to convince the company to make any fundamental change in its personnel management policies.
A sixth alternative would require David Gold to change his management and communication style. The fact that it took a summer intern to tell Gold that the management team was in turmoil is an indication of problems David has as a leader. Some of the comments reported in the appendix suggest that David needs help if he is going to develop a management team that will work toward common goals. David has the opportunity to become the type of manager that supports subordinates, helps
