Premininary Assessment of An Elderly Person

The results of an interview of an elderly person, together with a preliminary assessment (interviewer's reaction) of that person is presented in this research. These data are presented within the contexts of (1) identifying data, (2) description, (3) family history, (4) life style changes, (5) perception of aging, and (6) interviewer's reaction.

Personal characteristics of the person interviewed are presented in this section. These characteristics range are primarily demographic in character.

The subject of this interview is a male. He is a physically active person.

The subject of this interview is 72 years old. He is nearer to 72 years old than to 73 years old.

The subject of this interview is a Caucasian. Ethnically, he is an Irish-American.

The subject of this interview is a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. He is not especially active in the local Mormon stake.

The subject of this interview is a college graduate. His highest level of formal educational attainment is a Bachelor's Degree.

The subject of this interview is no longer formally employed. Earlier in his life, he was employed by the Boeing Company for more than 25 years and conducted his own business as a manufacturer's representative for approximately 15 years.

ally is sound. He has experienced a significant hearing loss; however, he does not use an artificial hearing aid device. He was required to have knee-repair surgery four years ago following a jogging accident. He has a sleep problem (not being able to fall asleep easily) for which he has undergone some therapy. Mental Health The mental health of the person interviewed is sound. While he had not experienced any depression, however, he has on occasion expressed concern for the health of his spouse. Family History The family history of the individual interviewed is presented in this section. This family focuses on the present relationships maintained by the person interviewed with both the family of orientation and the family of procreation. Social and Interpersonal Relationships: Family of Orientation The individual's family of orientation is comprised of his spouse, their adult children, and their grandchildren. All of the adult children and grandchildren live within five miles of the individual's residence, and there exist active social and interpersonal relationships between the individual and his spouse, on the one hand, and each of the families of the adult children, on the other hand.
