Interpretation of Provided Statistical Tests

Appropriate Research Question. The appropriate research question investigated was as follows: "Is subject academic performance among eighth graders in reading, mathematics, science, and history/geography, as measured by standardized tests, correlated to a statistically significant extent with subject locus of control and socio-economic status, where the criterion for the rejection of the null is p<.01?"Identification of Variables. Data for six variables were obtained from NELS 88 (National Educational Longitude Study of 1988). These six variables were as follows: Locus of Control (coded as "bylocus1"). Data were structured so that higher scores indicated higher internal locus of control. Socio-economic Status (coded as "byses"). Data were structured so that higher scores indicated higher socio-economic status. Reading Standardized Score (coded as "by2xrstd"). Data were structured so that higher scores indicated higher proficiency in reading. Mathematics Standardized Score (coded as "by2xmstd"). Data were structured so that higher scores indicated higher proficiency in mathematics. Science Standardized Score (coded as "by2xsstd"). Data were structured so that higher scores indicated higher proficiency in science. History/Geography Standardized Score (coded as "by2xhstd"). Data were structured so that higher scores indicated higher proficiency in history/geography. Statistical Results. The results of the correlation matrix analysis are presented

igher socio-economic status.
Home Language Background (coded as "byhmlang"). Data were categorized as "non-English only" (coded "1"), "non-English dominant" (coded as "2"), "English-dominant" (coded as "3"), and "English-only" (coded as "4").
Statistical Results. A one-way ANOVA was run, which produced descriptive statistics, a test of the homogeneity of variances, post hoc tests that provided multiple comparisons, and homogeneous subset data. These results are presented in attached tables·"Oneway," "Post Hoc Tests," and "Homogeneous Subsets."
Discussion of Results. As the data presented in the "Oneway" table indicate, the F-statistic of 11.97 indicates that the relationship between the dependent variable (socio-economic status) and the independent variable (home language background) is statistically significant at p .000, which satisfies the requirement in the research question for the rejection of the null (p<.05). Thus, at a general level, the statistical results permit a conclusion to be drawn that subject socio-economic status is a function of home language background. As the data presented in the "Post Hoc Tests" table indicate, a home language background of "English-dominant" is associated with a higher socio-econo
