Internship in Marketing
This is an excerpt from the paper...
Apex Business Communications is a small company which provides professional writing services to companies in the Orange County area. The products they offer include technical writing (manuals and on-line help), Web content (although they do not specialize in Web design), white papers, data sheets, brochures and similar types of publications. They have an established clientele, and also work with new customers on occasion. For this assignment, I worked on two projects with Ethentica, a company which is relatively new and whose ownership is complicated (Ethentica is owned by XL Vision which, in turn, is owned by Safeguard Scientifics, a publicly traded company).Ethentica (formerly Who?Vision) has two different product lines. The first is software-based and focuses on providing secure Web transactions for both business-to-business and business-to-consumer applications. Ethentica is not the first company which has attempted to provide this type of security, but it has taken a cutting edge approach to the technology and is now attempting to introduce that product to the market. The other product line focuses on providing security for computing devices (primarily laptops and person

All of the documents were to be prepared using Microsoft Word97 and once Ethentica approved the final draft, they would be converted by Apex to Acrobat Reader (PDF) format. These versions would be posted on the company's Web site and sent out on demo CD-ROMs, as well. I would go to Ethentica on an as-needed basis to meet with various engineers and marketing individuals, but would prepare the work on a laptop provided by Apex. I would email my drafts to Ethentica and Apex and would generally receive information back from them via e-mail, as well.
Problems Encountered
One of the first problems I encountered was too much input and a lack of direction. I started work on the data sheet first, since Pamela (who directed my work) felt that would be the best introduction and have the fastest turnaround time. Because I was entirely unfamiliar with Ethentica's products, they provided me with a lot of information, including product design specifications, competitors' information, and press releases. From this, I was expected to desi
