Differences in Japanese & U.S. Companies

ccording to Japanese legend, Jimmu himself was a direct descendant of the sun goddess. The Japanese adopted the Chinese writing system in approximately 405 AD, and the Chinese introduced Buddhism in the sixth century. There has been significant Chinese influence on the Japanese culture since that time. Emperors have ruled Japan throughout its long history, but shoguns (military governors) were particularly influential until the mid-nineteenth century. Japan's people remained largely isolated from the rest of the world both by geography as well as choice; even today, it is difficult for non-Japanese to attain Japanese citizenship. This isolation has resulted in a largely homogeneous culture which has preserved its traditions and structure for dozens of generations, and which separates the nation's business organizations from those in other countries ("Background Notes," 2001).

The United States has a much shorter history than Japan, with the first European settlers reaching the eastern shores in the sixteenth century. The nation gained its independence in 1776, but did not complete its westward expansion until the late 1800s; the last two states added to the nation joined in the mid-twentieth century. Although there was a considerable indigenous population when European settlers arrived, the Indian nations were scattered and lacked the ability to form alliances that might have made it possible to combat the European settlers effectively. The nation itself built on immigration, primarily from Europe, and on forced immigration consisting of African slaves. Unlike Japan, which has a largely homogeneous ethnic composition, the United States has a largely diverse ethnic composition, although positions of power tend to be held by white males. The United States also lacks the commitment to a single tradition, or even a single religion, that is found in Japan, and places considerable emphasis on the individual over the collective. ...
