Many companies consider internal corporate communications to be one-sided communications from management to employees. Companies may be creative in the way that they formulate those communications, using newsletters, staff meetings and even intranets as the medium of communication, but the process is rarely considered strategic or quantitative. Increasingly, however, analysts are coming to realize that corporate communications occur regardless of whether companies plan those communications or not, and even a lack of communication is, itself, a type of communication. By understanding the role that internal corporate communications plays in an organization, and by seeking to manage and control that communication, organizations can improve their internal productivity and their external competitiveness. This research considers the nature of internal corporate communications, potential problems that can arise as part of the communication process, and ways to avoid or solve those problems.
WHAT IS INTERNAL CORPORATE COMMUNICATIONS?
Internal corporate communications cover a wide variety of types of communications. Typically, these types of communications focus on transmitting information from management to employees, and may include subjects such as productivity information, product information, strategic direction and similar types of data. In addition, human resources is often heavily involved in internal corporate communications since the subject matter often covers areas of interest to all employees such as benefits, downsizing, mergers, pensions and other related information. As a result, there is often no coordinated plan for disseminating information to employees other than through a newsletter or intranet, with no one person responsible for determining what types of data should be communicated (Revathy n.p.).
