The purpose of this paper is to discuss how racial profiling, the war on drugs and urban profiling are interrelated and come together to create what has been termed a "culture of poverty". Poverty is primarily a result of interrelated factors, including parental employment status and earnings, family structure and parent education. People raised in a specific class learn certain thought patterns, social interactions and cognitive strategies that often remain with the individual through adulthood. Schools and businesses operate from middle class norms and use (but don't teach) the hidden rules of the middle class (Pearson, 2003: 6). Today, if you are born poor, there is a high probability that you will grow up to be poor. The exceptions are rare when measured against the ideals of social progress in which our society believes (Held and McGrew, 2000).
