The theories of Physicalism and Interactionalism are necessarily in conflict. Physicalists hold that mental events have their origins in the physical or material realm, and can therefore be approached as "physical" occurrences. Interactionalism, in contrast, asserts that there is insufficient common ground between the neural and the physical realities of human experience to make this generalisation.

Physicalist theory has found support for a number of reasons, the most important of these being the scientific advancements in the field of neurology.
