Three innovative practices are presented and analyzed. Examples with explanations of why these practices are innovative, issues and problems that prompted the use of the approaches, the needs addressed by the practices, and the strengths and weaknesses of the practices are described. In addition, a description of why these practices are examples of innovative excellence is provided with an explanation of why they are used as best practices or to benchmark processes. As a counselor and test examiner in higher education, the three innovative practices selected for review for this paper include the following: computer-based career development program; computer-based management information system; and computer-based educational resource and research program. Computer-based Career Development Program. Today's career counseling efforts must include advanced information systems such as the Internet. The counselor must be able to assist students as they attempt to choose the right tools for career and job searches (Cummins, 2001). Cummins pointed out that cross-referencing now requires knowledge of technology. Research strategies taught to students now include information about the Internet and how to search the net. Counselors in higher education assist students in understanding career issues, which now requires the counselor as well as the student to understand technological tools such as search engine

While computer-based career guidance systems began in the late 1960s, today's systems are more advanced. New technology has made it possible for programs to be enhanced with audio, video, color, and graphics (Harris-Bowlsbey & Sampson, 2005). High-powered search engines find sites, translate languages for diverse populations, provide assessment tools, and provide directors with salary surveys and more. These systems are found worldwide on the Internet (Harris-Bowlsbey & Sampson, 2005). The Computer-Based Career Development Program is one of these programs and fill current needs to assist counselors in higher education with the problem of career counseling and development.
The need to help students plan and develop their career goals demands a program that provides optimal testing strategies as well as advanced searches that can only be accomplished with the Internet. Increased globalization has resulted in a worldwide job market as well as the need to be skilled in technological advances.
